JOAN KARSTENS lives in St. Joseph with her husband Peter. They operated Brentwood on the Beach a luxury Bed and Breakfast overlooking Lake Huron for 25 years. After retiring in October 2014 she pursued a long time dream to paint.
She grew up in Exeter the daughter of Doris and Herm Dettmer. Both her mother and her Aunt Pat Cook of Hensall were artists and influenced her love of art.
Joan lived in Germany for a year in 1966/67. She worked as an Air Canada Flight Attendant for 10 years and has travelled extensively over her lifetime but considers Huron County and the shore her real home.
In 1967 on her first trip to Paris she visited the Louvre and the L’Orangerie where surrounded by Claude Monet’s Water Lily paintings she fell in love with his colours and his style. Travel allowed her the opportunity to visit many famous art museums. Van Gogh is another favourite artist. Frequent visits to the German Expressionist, Emil Nolde’s museum on the German, Danish border is a favourite creative escape. Surrounded by famous works of art and growing up with an artist in residence inspire her today. Joan says she draws her creative energy living along “Ontario’s West Coast”.
